What a Terrific Tour! And a great intro to chemistry. The Russell F. Tennant Water Treatment Facilty was so welcoming and interesting.
We started off in the conference room with Bill drawing us a diagram of the water cycle. Then we walked it.Raw water uptake
Walking on top of the flocking tanks
The 80’s vintage computer.
Scary Huge Tanks of NaOH, in containment walls, treated with obvious respect and care.
The pumps taking the flocked water to the carbon filter tanks.
Mixing in the Flouride and Cloride
And the Control Room.
Bill asked to hear how the boy’s JR F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League project turns out.
This would be a great tour for a chemistry class, or older bunch of kids. The younger kids loved the BIG MACHINES, but didn’t necessarily get the chemistry part. B asked what pH was, and I had a forehead thwacking moment – you know the Mommy "I’ve FAILLLL-EDDDD" which is really silly. I didn’t ever hear about pH until 8th grade in my rather excellent public school science program. I am deciding to be happy he’s heard about in a memorable context!
